Humidors to the Rescue: A Necessity for any Cigar Smokers

Perhaps the movies are to blame. All those scenes in which says the powerful businessman or politician to the naive hero, “I will give you a cigar in May,” then-without missing a beat-brandishes a gold-embossed cigar case. A case with no humidity controls. A case that is not a humidor.
Whatever the reason, many casual cigar smokers-and even fairly committed lovers of premium cigars-don’t realize how important it is to store your cigars in a humidor.
In fact, if you want as many smokers are, you’re asking yourself what a humidor, and why it is used. A humidor is basically a box used to keep your cigars in a certain degree of humidity (near seventy percent) and a reasonable temperature (seventy degrees or below) if you do not, you know, it’s smoke.
Why exactly is that almost seventy percent humidity is so important figure? To answer this question, we must remember what cut a cigar, a series of dried, cured, fermented, rolled-together leaves. When the cigar maker picked these leaves, let them dry, and cured them, etc., it put the leaves on a process that ends in the death of the leaves, and the death of their taste. In the fresh air, these leaves can dry out easily, and the cigar loses its taste. In a too humid environment, on the other they get moldy. Basically, once you buy a cigar, you are in a war with the elements, your job is to hold the cigar the taste for life, while the elements (air, bacteria, etc.) want your cigar to be spoiled.
The humidity is your ally in this fight. The tobacco plant has been in an environment near seventy percent humidity is the state in which you find most often they thrive in the natural and if you can replicate that humidity, your cigars in good shape. The best humidors use Spanish cedar or begin to Honduras mahogany, the humidity, and they have a hygrometer, a device controls and allows you to monitor moisture.
Once you know why you need one, here are some tips on care and feeding of humidors. First of all, new humidors need to be “seasoned”. When you buy your humidor, before using it, wipe the interior wood with a damp cloth, then leave a small, closed container of water inside the humidor for 12 hours. After those twelve hours, check to see how much the closed bottle of water in the humidor “has drank.” If it is almost empty, then repeat the process for another twenty four hours. Repeat this process until the water stops evaporating, the humidor is now ready for your cigars!
You must also fill the hygrometer (the device controls humidity). Use distilled water or wetting solution (the humidor should come with manuals on this choice). Let excess water drip from the hygrometer into a sink, and wipe the outside of the device. Put it in the humidor. Another option you should not use a hygrometer, is a new product that many experienced farmers have switched the stick: Bóveda packs. Bóveda Packs are an amazing invention. Each pack is rated for a certain humidity level, either 72%, 69% and 65%.
Simply place the correct number of packages Bóveda in your humidor to maintain a precise relative humidity. Each Bóveda package consists of a specially prepared saturated solution of pure water and natural salt. This saturated solution is contained within a water vapor permeable reverse osmosis membrane. Within a closed desktop humidor Bóveda maintains a predetermined level (RH) by releasing or absorbing purified water-vapor-demand through the membrane. Boveda packs are used only once, they are not refillable. They are very stiff when the contents are output. These amazing packs last around 2 months in an average humidor.
Another recommendation: Keep your humidor in the vicinity of household appliances, which are at home humidity, or places in the home where these appliances tend to affect more saved. It would be conceivable, for example, heaters, air conditioners, fans, ventilators and windows. Keep it well, direct from sustainable solar radiation; pay attention to the way the sun changes during the seasons, also because some “safe places” in your home may be less safe during the summer when the sun’s rays on creep in and stay longer.
And finally know what to do if, despite all your preparations, your cigars suffer an attack of tobacco beetles. This irritating species preys on tobacco and can in some cases through a hole in humidor. First, remember not to let the temperature go too high in your humidor tobacco beetles flourish at temperatures over 75 degrees. (So a tobacco-beetle infestation means that you are not being monitored that humidor carefully enough!) From Take the cigars that have been infected and keep them in the freezer for 48 hours. Refrigerate it after that for another day. Now they should be sure to replace the multi-humidor, which should be thoroughly cleaned, checked for structural integrity and if necessary in the meantime. Spanish cedar humidors, by the way, are slightly better for the leadership of this nasty bug in the first place.
